Neither blue laser technology will take off because of HDMI copy protection. People don't realize it, but to get full high def video from these two formats, you will have to buy a new TV and Receiver! Even if your current big screen is HDTV ready, you can't get resolution any better than regular DVD on an HDTV without HDMI copy protected inputs. There's a multi layer red laser HD-DVD format coming out with the same bitrate as Blu-Ray/HD-DVD that will let you use your existing component inputs and outputs on your existing reciever and Big-screen and get full HD resolution without HDMI.

sony recently said that any dvds that they produce will put out hd content no matter the output type. component, dvi, or hdmi will all put out the same resolution; there will be no down-scaling on sony movies.

hopefully, the other studios will realize how right sony is in thinking that this is what the consumer wants and needs.
