DEAR WENDY is the latest distinctively conceived work from the controversial "brothers" of Dogme 95, Thomas Vinterberg (It's All About Love; Festen) and Lars von Trier (Manderlay; Dogville; Dancer In The Dark).
Directed by Vinterberg from a script by von Trier, DEAR WENDY stars Jamie Bell (King Kong; Nicholas Nickleby; Billy Elliot) and Bill Pullman (The Grudge; Igby Goes Down) heading an impressive cast of Hollywood's hottest up-and-coming young actors including Michael Angarano (Sky High; Lords Of Dogtown), Chris Owen (Van Wilder; American Pie), Alison Pill (Confessions Of A Teenage Drama Queen; Pieces Of April) and Mark Webber (Broken Flowers; Storytelling).
Dick (Jamie Bell) is a teenage loner living an empty life in the poor American mining town of Estherslope. That all changes, however, when Dick happens upon a small, pearl-handled six-shooter and, despite his pacifist leanings, becomes obsessed with the gun, even to the extent of giving it a name – Wendy.
Inspired by his newfound "partner", Dick befriends the rest of the town's young outcasts and misfits, convincing them to join him in a secret club he calls The Dandies. Dedicating themselves to the non-violent study of the finer points of ballistics, marksmanship and exit wounds, The Dandies establish and adhere to a strict code of honour, the most important rule of which is "never draw your weapon."
But the arrival of an outsider and a dire misunderstanding together provide a catalyst to an event that leads The Dandies to accept that rules are meant to be broken…
A contemporary teen fable that contains echoes of the westerns of Sam Peckinpah, DEAR WENDY is an explosive indictment of modern-day gun culture played out against a dynamic soundtrack of songs by The Zombies, which remarkably play as important a role in the proceedings as any of the film's characters.
DEAR WENDY (cert. 15) will be released on DVD (£15.99) by Metrodome on 9th January 2005. Special Features include: audio commentary by director Thomas Vinterberg and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle; "9 Letters To Wendy" – selected scene commentary by the cast; "Letters To Dear Wendy" – "Making of" documentary; deleted scenes; The Director and The Screenwriter – an interview with Thomas Vinterberg and Lars Von Trier; UK and US trailers; TV spots; poster artwork.
