Based on Puccini’s La Boheme, Rent paints a modern day portrait of struggling bohemians and artists making their way in New York’s infamous Alphabet City at the dawn of the 1990s. It tells the story of a group of friends struggling to live and make rent against the gritty background of New York’s East Village while holding fast to their bohemian ideals and pursuits. Confronting poverty, addiction, illness and the AIDS epidemic, these young artists strive for gain and acceptance, and above all, connection to their world and each other.
