DVD Review: Cow Belles

Cow Belles is the usual Disney Channel fare.  It’s an okay time killer for the kids or tweens.  It’s really a story that has been told over and over again – snotty kids learn to appreciate the little people and that there’s more to life than money.

Taylor (Alyson Michalka) and Courtney (Amanda Michalka) are spoiled rich girls.  Their Dad Reed (Jack Coleman) owns the local dairy and the girls are not exactly wanting for money.  So they can drop $1000 for a dress and not blink an eye.  Taylor is good at doing figures (comes in handy when calculating sale prices on their numerous shopping trips) and has just got her driver’s license.

Courtney is good with computers and is planning for the big upcoming cotillion.  Taylor’s dad makes arrangements to have local farm boy Jackson (Michael Trevino) teach her how to drive stick when she is given her mother’s old Mustang for a “learning to drive” present.  This does not go well and Taylor dunks Jackson’s new truck in the pond when she forgets to set the parking brake.

They both get an “urgent” call for a sale at the mall and leave the house in a hurry, but they pitch a rag on the stove on the way out the door and nearly burn down the house.  Their Dad decides that enough is enough and makes them get jobs at the family dairy.  Reed then goes out of the country on a trip.  Courtney gets goo goo eyes for Philippe (Chris Gallinger), the French exchange student working at the dairy, and want to ask him to be her date at the cotillion.

Their first day at the dairy always goes poorly and their second day is even worse when all the employee’s paychecks bounce.  The company accounts are wiped out and Reed’s partner Bob Fenwick (Michael Rhoades) seems to think that Reed took off with the money.  Taylor decides to use the $20,000 for Courtney’s cotillion to cover the dairy’s expenses until Reed can return.

Problem is that she decides this without telling Courtney and she does not take it well.  Will the dairy be saved, will Courtney ever talk to Taylor again, and what will happen to the cotillion?

The acting is of the usual slightly over the top variety.  However, my objections on that will be lost on the kids, who really won’t care or are used to this if they watch enough of the Disney Channel shows.

Cow Belles is presented in fullscreen as it was originally shown on the Disney Channel.  Special features include a 6 minute behind-the-scenes featurette.

It has interviews with Alyson Michalka, Amanda “A. J.” Michalka, Chris Gallinger, and Michael Trevino.  There are also two music videos by Aly & A.J. (“On the Ride” and “Rush”).  The back of the box promises an “exclusive alternative ending.”

However, I was not able to find anything under special features about this and can only assume that it was added into the feature.  I don’t know since I never watched the show on Disney Channel.

Not too bad and a perfect time killer for the kids.  I’d suggest a rental for family movie night.  Maybe the lessons the girls learn in the show will cross over to the audience.

Cow Belles is now available at Amazon. As of yet, there is not a release date for the UK. Visit the DVD database for more information.
