Ambulance chasing television shrink Dr. Phil McGraw defended himself Monday against criticism that he violated Britney Spears’ privacy when he visited her in the hospital Saturday morning.
“I want to set the record straight. I went to see Britney at the request of her family. I talked to Lynne, Jamie and Brian, because they were frustrated that she wasn’t going to be held for a longer time,” McGraw said on CBS’ “Early Show.”
Asked how he had come to be involved in the saga, Dr. Phil said, “Thursday night, the phone rang, it was Lynne, clearly she was very upset. Any parent would be. I was first contacted by her family a year ago and had maintained a running dialogue for the last year or so.”
Father Jamie tells TMZ.com he will not participate in any televised “intervention.”
TMZ.com says it spoke with eight psychiatrists who don’t think Dr. Phil should have been allowed in to see Spears when he doesn’t have in-patient privileges.
“Britney didn’t ask for it, Britney didn’t know about it” and Spears walked out when Dr. Phil walked in, said TMZ.com managing editor Harvey Levin.
Spears allegedly “angrily” kicked McGraw out of her room and demanded he leave at once according to FOX news.
Dr. Phil said he eventually did meet with Spears for about an hour. He told “Entertainment Tonight” and “The Insider” in a press release that she’s in “dire need” of medical and psychological help despite being let out of the hospital.
Dr. Phil was supposed to devote an entire episode to Britney Spears, but he has called it off.
It was reported that Dr. Phil tried to get Britney and her family on his show to stage an intervention.
He said to Entertainment Tonight, “Because the Spears situation is too intense at this time, and out of consideration to the family, I have made the decision not to move forward with the taping at this particular time. Britney and her family are in our prayers and we ask that they be in yours.”
Michael K of DListed reports that McGraw is “acting like he’s doing the honorable thing.”
Life & Style reports that Brit’s dad, Jamie Spears, told the entire Spears clan to keep away from Dr. Phil. A source said, “As soon as Jamie realized Dr. Phil was making public statements about Britney, including assessments of her condition, he got angry. He started making phone calls to everybody in the family, telling them not to cooperate with Dr. Phil.”
Lynne Spears and Brian Spears were going to take part in Phil’s show, but they have pulled out.Note the date on this article may be incorrect due to importing it from our old system.
