Daniel Davis Let Go From La Cage, Goulet To Replace

Gary Beach and Daniel Davis in La Cage

New York: Daniel Davis, the actor who plays Georges in Broadway’s La Cage aux Folles, was let go from the production after the Sunday matinee. Robert Goulet will replace him beginning in mid-April. Davis’ understudy, John Hillner will play the role until Goulet takes over.

“It is absolutely thrilling to hear Robert Goulet singing these great Jerry Herman songs. He is true Broadway and is right back where he belongs” said producer James L. Nederlander in a statement. “We wish the talented Daniel Davis well in his future endeavors.”

While no offical reason was given for Davis’ departure, rumors have been swirling that Davis would be let go. The NY Post reported earlier that Davis was clashing with other cast members and co-star Gary Beach. The two were reportedly no longer on speaking terms.

Robert Goulet created the role of Lancelot in the musical Camelot. His other stage credits include The Fantasticks, Man of La Mancha, and South Pacific. Goulet won a Tony award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical for The Happy Time.

In La Cage aux Folles, a gay couple must pretend to be straight – with one of them in drag – to dupe a senator for one night that they are a normal American family because their son wants to marry his daughter.
