Dan Aykroyd spoke for many of us saying “So many people in my homeland have been affected by cancer. A staggering 2 of 5 Canadians will develop cancer in their lifetimes. Our mothers, our fathers, our sisters, our brothers, our children, our uncles, our aunts.” Gilda Radner and Dan Aykroyd
“In my own life, cancer has taken my neighbour Walter, my dear friend Barbara Orbison, of course Gilda Radner, my writing partner Tom Davies and two days ago my business manager of 30 years Barbara Bryson.”
Stand Up to Cancer is the passion project of Hollywood stars hand in hand with leading scientists, doctors and corporations raising money and awareness to stem the tide of cancer deaths. Years ago, cancer treatments resulted in 10% cures. Today we stand at 60%. SU2C’s aim is to bring us to 80% cure in the next few years, and eventually 100%. Each of us has been or will be touched by cancer in some way.
Justin Mikita and Jesse Tyler Ferguson
Jesse Tyler Ferguson has been touched by cancer. “I have such compassion for people affected by cancer. My husband Justin Mikita is a cancer survivor, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma and he has been cancer free for 15 years. Justin’s cancer story has a happy ending but we know that much more remains to be done in the fight. I am delighted to kick off the programme in Canada.”
More Canadians die of cancer than any other cause, every year, year in and year out. Cancer has zero respect for age, position, gender or type. It is the leading cause of death among Canadian children. Cancer must be stopped and that’s the aim of SU2C. MacLachlan paid tribute to the doctors, researchers, advocates and those “in the fight. You are the rock stars. I lost my mom and my dad to cancer, my father to colon cancer and my mom t ovarian cancer. It’s a loss I feel every day of my life. My son will turn 6 soon. I want him to grow up and say “Dad, I heard about cancer and I heard we are the tipping point in cancer research”.
On September 5 of this year on the opening weekend of the Toronto International Film Festival four national Canadian broadcasters will join forces to produce a massive fundraising telecast Stand Up to Cancer Canada. It will be chock-a-block with stars attending the festival as well as the longstanding celebs that got on board SU2C years ago, like Ferguson and MacLachlan.
Stand Up to Cancer Canada will be an unprecedented hour-long show with top film, TV and music stars and serious TIFF drop-ins. Canada’s Global CITY, CTV and CBC networks will simulcast with ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and dozens of other U.S. cable networks in a truly bi-coastal event airing from Toronto and Hollywood 8 p.m. ET/PT. Sept, 5.
