Country music icon George Strait leads ACM Award nominations

Country music icon George Strait showed he is still at the top of his game when he picked up eight nominations for the Academy of Country Music Awards on Monday. Strait’s nominations included top male vocalist and entertainer of the year.

Strait also received nominations for his work as producer on ‘It Just Comes Natural’ and the single “Give it Away” – which also picked up a nomination for song of the year.

During the announcement at the Country Music Hall of Fame, Brooks & Dunn received seven nominations – including entertainer of the year, top vocal duo, and album of the year for ‘Hillbilly Deluxe.’ Rascal Flatts received six nominations including entertainer of the year, top vocal group, best single “What Hurts the Most,” and best album of the year for ‘Me and My Gang.’

Former American Idol and country music sweetheart Carrie Underwood received five nominations and the country rock duo Big & Rich had four.

The nominations were aired on CBS’ “The Early Show” and were introduced by country superstar Kenny Chesney (who was named ACM entertainer of the year in 2006) and country duo Sugarland. The 42nd Annual Academy of Country Music Awards ceremony will be held on May 15th in Las Vegas.
