New York: Chita Rivera: The Dancer’s Life will play Broadway’s Schoenfeld Theater. Previews will begin on November 23rd and the show will officially open December 11th.
The complete cast includes Rivera as herself and Liana Ortiz as little Chita. The ensemble will include Richard Amaro, Cleve Asbury, Lloyd Culbreath, Jasmine Perri, Madeleine Kelly, Malinda Farrington, Edgard Gallardo, Deirdre Goodwin, Richard Montoya, Lainie Sakakura, Alex Sanchez and Allyson Tucker.
The Dancer’s Life will play San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre from September 10th – 23rd before moving to Broadway.
The creative team includes book by Terrence McNally, direction and choreography by Graciela Daniele, scenic design by Loy Arcenas, costume design by Toni Leslie James, and lighting design by Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer.
According to the notes The Dancer’s Life is a “tour through landmark creations in the American theatre that were helmed by some of the greatest talents in its history, including Jerome Robbins, Leonard Bernstein, Bob Fosse, Gower Champion and Michael Kidd.” The show will include new songs by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, numbers from West Side Story, Chicago and Kiss of the Spider Woman.
Chita Rivera has won Tony Awards for The Rink and Kiss of the Spider Woman. She has been nominated for Bye Bye Birdie, Chicago, Bring Back Birdie, Merlin, Jerry’s Girls, and Nine. She also starred in the original production of West Side Story.
