The musical opened on Broadway at the John Golden Theater on July 31, 2003. The production won the 2004 Tony Awards for Best Score, Best Book, and Best Musical. Instead of launching a tour soon after, the musical moved instead to Las Vegas where it completed a run at the Wynn Las Vegas Hotel and Casino. That contract kept the musical from touring. Besides Broadway, a London production is currently on going.

Avenue Q is the story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college grad who comes to New York City with big dreams and a tiny bank account. He soon discovers that the only neighborhood in his price range is Avenue Q; still, the neighbors seem nice. Together, Princeton and his newfound friends struggle to find jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life.
