From Monsters and Critics.com Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Book Reviews Once again the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America have selected the best of the best short stories, poems, novellas and scripts for their Nebula Awards Showcase featuring the 2006 award winners. These are the sorts of creative, visionary stories that raised the sci-fi fantasy genre from simple pulp fiction to a legitimate literary art form enjoyed by millions. Best Short Story award winner, Elizabeth Hand drew upon real life experiences when she wrote the hauntingly beautiful “Echo” about a long distance love affair that eventually crumbled away as the world and the technologies that kept them in touch fell apart. James Patrick Kelly won Best Novella with “Burn”, a fascinating story about a fanatical group who decided to follow Thoreau’s model and spurn the technologies embraced by Upsiders of the Thousand Worlds. Kelly spins a convincing yarn of conflict, religious conviction, betrayal and sacrifice that transcends time and place. Each entry is prefaced by a short author’s bio and story introduction. The book concludes with information about the Nebula Awards including past winners and the Author Emeritus Award. This collection earns a place on the "keeper" list.
