As the child of an angel and touched by the Archer in the Abysmal plane, twenty-something Zoë Martinique was still coming to terms with her changing abilities as a Wraith. Not only can Zoë navigate the astral plane, she is now capable of bringing her body with her; a rare talent and a secret she has yet to reveal to anyone. The Archer has been instructing Zoë but is hardly a benevolent figure, he is fundamentally linked to his pupil to the extent that should she die, so will he.
When Revenant First Borns begin turning up drained of blood, Zoë realizes there something or someone is systematically searching out the humans bonded to First Borns. Contained within the Grimoire are incantations too dangerous to read much less use but as the body count rises, Zoe must make some difficult choices with little hope of surviving the upcoming battle. It will take more then her father's intervention to overcome the power of ancient family grudges in this fast paced urban fantasy.
Although occasionally a bit confusing, this action packed addition to the Zoë Martinique series will satisfy Weldon’s fans. There are some interesting plot points involving the First Borns as they bond with new hosts that will most certainly be adding to future adventures. Newcomers to the series would be well served to start at the beginning as the many characters and their history could prove daunting to jump into the middle of. Fans of Kat Richardson’s Greywalker series will see several parallels between the heroines as they traverse other planes and confront tough adversaries.
