Pray for salvation . . . Pray for daylight . . . Murder has pulled Mira out of the shadows and back into the living world . . . As the fire-wielding enforcer of the nightwalker coven wrestles with the mind-destroying ghosts of her dark past, the slaying of a senator\'s daughter in Savannah threatens to expose her kind to the ...more
Told from vampire hunter Danaus’s point of view, the fourth book of the Dark Days series finds the ancient warrior questioning everything he has believed about the nightwalkers. As his feelings for the nightwalker Mira become more complex, Danaus cannot decide if vampires are truly evil creatures or if there is much more to them then he has been led to believe. Sent to Mira’s turf in Savanna, Georgia to quiet acquisitions and investigations into the death of a senator’s daughter, Danaus is partnered with the nightwalker and must now work at keeping her safe. The Naturi are raising havoc with humans and vampires alike and it soon becomes clear that events are being orchestrated by the demon Gaizka who has long-term designs on Danaus. Only by combining their strengths can Danaus and Mira hope to survive the upcoming battle of wills.
While the different perspective makes an interesting change to the series, Danaus’s constant struggle with the issue of who’s evil and who isn’t wears thin, especially in light of the fact that at 1800 years old, he’s had plenty of time to adequately contemplate the question. Several characters appear to have been thrown into the story simply to have someone to kill off later on. The antagonist is less then convincing, as is the cliffhanger conclusion that fails to leave readers caring much about Danaus and Mira’s fate.
