Cat Crawfield's best friend Denise MacGregor knows all too well the hazards of getting involved with the supernatural world of vampires, ghouls and worse. As she sat cowering in the basement during a New Year’s party gone horribly wrong, Denise’s husband Randolph was torn apart by creatures straight out of her worst nightmare. Now, a year later, Denise’s cousin Paul insists his sister’s recent death by heart attack was murder and with someone following him, he suspects he’s next. Prophetic words as Denise watches a mysterious figure choke the life from Paul before turning into a huge dog.
Not wanting to bother Cat and her husband, Denise calls Spade, the only other vampire contact she can think of. Spade is a disturbing figure who has little time to spend on humans aside from feeding. Although he is certain Denise is overreacting, when Spade arrives at her house it is to the unmistakable stink of demon. He finds Denise alive but wearing the demon Raum’s brands that will eventually turn her into a demon unless she completes the task set for her. To preserve her humanity and the lives of her few remaining family members, Denise must find and deliver one of her distant relatives to Raum. Spade pledges his assistance while struggling to contain a growing attraction for this brave, beautiful woman who now, thanks to the taint of demon in her blood, will be killed by any vampire who discovers her secret.
Frost has created a suitably dark and dangerous paranormal love story with the addition of demonology and a slightly different twist to shape shifters that will leave fans wanting more. Despite coping with a full load of grief and guilt, Denise’s character displays strength, resilience and plenty of smarts. Spade has issues of his own but manages to avoid falling into the stereotypical dark, brooding vampire character. The sexual tension sings as fast-paced action keeps readers on their toes and an act of forgiveness could change a lifetime of regret.
