After her mother died and her father crawled into a bottle, Lily Carlyle did whatever it took to take care of her little sister Rose including stealing and lying. Lily’s promise to protect her sister wasn’t enough to keep Rose safe from a sick monster like Lucas Johnson. A desperate attempt to exact street justice cost Lily her life yet as she was bleeding out, she was offered a second chance. Lily was reborn into the body of Alice Purdue and given the opportunity to atone for her many transgressions by becoming a warrior of light.
Demons are searching for the key that will unlock the ninth gate, allowing them passage to this world that will result in hell on earth. With the guidance of Clarence her handler, Lily begins a new life hunting demons, watching for signs of the Caller who will locate the key she is to destroy and fighting an attraction to Deacon. Although he has proven himself a useful ally, Deacon is a powerful Tri-Jal demon…so why is he helping Lily kill his own kind? Lily must deal with a steep learning curve if she is to stay alive long enough to fulfill her new role, too bad things are not quite what she thought.
Kenner adds an interesting twist to the demons-taking-over-the-world theme with a couple of strong, though unlikely protagonists allied against overwhelming odds. Lily’s effort to protect her sister is a nice touch in this fast-paced tale where few characters are what they seem. First in what promises to be an exciting new urban fantasy series, Kenner has laid the groundwork for Lily to do a whole lot more butt kicking with assistance from unlikely sources.
