Turned against her will after a calculated attack by Celina, a power hungry vampire who left her for dead; Merit continues to adjust to her new life. Pledged to Cadogan House, one of three in Chicago, Merit was given the title and responsibilities of Sentinel. Despite having sworn oaths of loyalty before Ethan the steamy Master of Cadogan House, Merit’s allegiance is an ongoing source of friction. To better discharge her obligations as Sentinel, Merit moved into Cadogan House but that has not made life any easier.
There is an upcoming shifter convention scheduled in Chicago, some members of the local media are checking out rumors of forbidden Rave parties in a bid to discredit the vampire community and Celina has been freed. In an attempt to find out what is the real motivation behind the negative press, Ethan presses Merit back into the elevated social circles she spent years attempting to distance herself from. Meanwhile, Celina has been released by the Presidium, the governing body overseeing vampire affairs. As Merit is the one responsible for upsetting her carefully laid plans, Celina plots her revenge while orchestrating events within the Chicago Houses with a masterful touch. Merit is maneuvered into taking action that forces her to face an uncomfortable truth about her vampire nature that could have long reaching consequences, especially as Ethan knows too.
Some new plot points, changes in character dynamics and Merit’s revelations about her vampiric nature go a long way toward keeping the storyline fresh. Merit’s romantic conflicts make an interesting subplot that thankfully, doesn’t dominate the story. While the climatic throw down seems a bit forced, the satisfying outcome more then makes up for it, especially as it provides fresh ground for what should be another exciting installment to a fun series that packs plenty of attitude.
