The second Vampire Memories Novel continues Eleisha Clevon’s story shortly after she assisted Phillip in kicking Julian, a vampire serial killer out a twelfth story window. Eleisha has been secretly writing Rose, another vampire hiding from Julian in the San Francisco area and she’s come up with a plan to open a safe haven for those looking for succor. The first real test of Eleisha’s plans will be a face-to-face meeting with Rose who could be either the real deal or working for Julian.
Unable to master the art of telepathy, Julian has been systematically wiping out the “normal” vampires, particularly those who practice the ancient laws while setting himself up as a dictator. Eleisha’s sudden manifestation of mental powers left Julian shaken but quite determined to destroy her in as painful a manner as he can dream up. Following an arcane rite, Julian summons a ghost to his bidding, which consists mainly of shadowing Eleisha and her two companions. With the information gathered by his ghostly minion, Julian’s plans quickly evolve into something much darker that could threaten all Eleisha hopes to accomplish.
Filled with action, a bit of politics and plenty of character building interactions, this is a strong addition to the series. Julian is a solid antagonist, so much so that readers will wonder how Eleisha’s efforts can possibly succeed given the information pipeline he has in place. The relationship between Eleisha and her housemates Phillip and Wade becomes a bit more complex with plenty of room for further development. Those looking for an alternative to Patricia Briggs or Ilona Andrews won’t be disappointed with Hendee’s newest series.
