Bounty hunter and recently turned vampire Anna Strong continues to struggle with finding a balance between her old human values and the reality of being part of the preternatural community. It’s not easy when Williams, her mentor continues to manipulate Anna and her family in such a way as to leave her without a human support system. As a result, Anna doesn’t trust Williams but when Culebra, her friend and proprietor of a supernatural safe haven is a death’s door due to a witch’s attack, she has no option but to ask him for help.
Now in debt to Williams, Anna must return the favor by looking into the draining deaths of several newly turned vampires while tracking Belinda Burke, Culebra’s attacker. Belinda is an extremely powerful witch with no love for Anna or her friends, seeing them as nothing more then tools to use or destroy at will. With Belinda and Anna’s old nemesis Gloria both involved in the latest rejuvenating cream, things start getting interesting and Anna has more then one reason to fear for her life.
While the action and subplots of the fifth Anna Strong, Vampire series are well crafted, the main plotline doesn’t hold any surprises. Readers will likely figure out who is responsible for the drainings and what is behind the latest rash of attacks by vampire wantabees by the first third of the book. Despite that, this is still a good read and provides the groundwork for much more from Anna as she continues to adapt to a new life and piss people off.
