Despite being descended from a long line of witches, Tammy Jo Trask’s magic always seems to go wrong. She wants nothing more then to get back to work as a cook but her latest magical mishaps have attracted the attention of the World Association of Magic in the form of wizard Jordan Perth and fire warlock Incendio Maldaron. Now Tammy has no choice but to train with them in preparation for an upcoming mandatory challenge where failure is not an option. Unfortunately, Jordan clearly is not being honest about what’s really going on and Incendio insists Tammy’s ocelot familiar Mercutio is his. Not a great time for Tammy’s ex-husband to show up spouting there’s no such thing as magic and threatening to commit her to a sanitarium.
Going against a WAM edict, Tammy turns to the oh-so-handsome Bryn Lyons for help. As a lawyer and wizard, Bryn is a powerful ally but one the family ghost has warned Tammy to beware of. With no shortage of secret agendas, a toxic spill of pixie dust and an assortment of creatures slipping into town through magical doors, Tammy is going to have to develop into her power soon or all hell is going to break loose.
Frost’s latest Southern Witch novel has all the fun, fast, entertaining action readers have come to expect from her. With no shortage of antagonists, Tammy doesn’t have much time to indulge in asking “Why me?” but instead, must rely on whatever help she can find. Populated with fairies, goblins, vampires, wizards, rampant plants and a few nasty tempered humans thrown in for good measure, there’s no end to the things that can and do go hilariously wrong. Tammy’s waffling between her ex-husband and Bryn is the only off note as readers are left wishing she would just put her men out of their misery and make up her mind.
