Resnick throws old style gumshoe detective John Mallory into an alternate Manhattan populated by every sort of paranormal creature imaginable in another amusing John Justin Mallory Mystery with a tip of the hat to Conan Doyle. Sherlock Holmes fans will surely recognize parallels to Silver Blaze when Mallory is hired to find Fluffy, a toy dragon favored to win Best of Show at the Eastminster Dragon Show. With only twenty-four hours to find the missing dragon and a huge bonus from his old nemesis, the demon known as Grundy, Mallory calls up the aid of an assortment of oddball assistants to meet the deadline. Felina the office cat-girl who is perpetually hungry, business partner Winnifred Carruthers and Belle, a lovelorn talking cell phone add plenty of hilarity to Mallory’s efforts as he closes in on an unlikely suspect.
This delightful series seems to get better with every new tale, its bright wit, eclectic collection of characters and strange twists make each one a treat. Don’t miss the recipe for Elephant-Shaped Chocolate Marshmallow Cookies that calls for, what else but an elephant and goes into a number of ways to shrink one. While a worthy story on its own, newcomers to Resnick’s offbeat take on paranormal mystery might as well get Stalking the Vampire and Stalking the Unicorn because once you get hooked, you’ll want more.
