The result of an unusual mating, half-vampire half-human Cat Crawford and her vampire lover Bones have been enjoying some well deserved R & R. After revealing the nature of a particularly disturbing nightmare, Cat chooses to visit Paris where they are greeted by Bone’s former master's guards. It is soon discovered that Cat’s dreams are not simple nightmares but the work of Gregor the dreamsnatcher, who has plans for Bones wife. Even as Bones and Mencheres work to protect Cat, Gregor plants the seeds of doubt, which leaves her questioning her memories and more. As Gregor pushes his claim to her, Bones and Cat begin tearing each other apart with destructive words and petty actions that threaten their chances at a life together until a showdown on the battlefield reveals exactly what Gregor’s interest really is.
Cat has transformed from a capable leader to a petty, whiny, bingeing wreak incapable of making up her own mind much of the time. Meanwhile, Bones has lost his polish to reveal an equally petty character bent on inflicting hurtful barbs and ultimatums in lieu of support. As the two main protagonists proceed to self-destruct, the importance of secondary characters like Vlad, Spade and Mencheres rise to prominence with further development. Although the storyline is interesting, it is frequently derailed by pointless crying, bingeing and snarking that detracts more then it adds. This has been a strong series to date, let us hope this is either a minor bump in the road or the final chapter.
