Patterson and Rust’s second Daniel X title features a particularly nasty alien, known as Number 5, who enjoys few things more then creating programming popular throughout the galaxy at the expense of the hapless victims. After an ambush by Number 21, alien hunter Daniel realizes its time for a change of tactics and begins attending high school where he finds the student body suddenly obsessed with an upcoming musical production. Using his considerable imaginative powers, Daniel confers with his parents and close friends while attempting to curb the considerable mayhem wrought by an unruly bunch of aliens. Daniel also strikes up an acquaintance with a sweet if slightly simple waitress while trying to outsmart Number 5. Naturally staying alive isn’t a given when Number 5 plans to feature Daniel as the star attraction of his latest gruesome program.
With its very unlikely young hero whose strongest weapon is nothing more then his imagination and skewed humor, horror and sci-fi fans will find this something of a tongue-in-cheek take on the genre. Light, funny and fast, this is suitable for a broad age group from preteen to adults and quite different from Patterson’s usual fare.
