After a near death experience left her as a Greywalker, Seattle based private investigator Harper Blaine’s life hasn’t been the same. Now she knows about vampires and less savory denizens of the paranormal yet even that knowledge didn’t prepare Harper for a phone call from beyond the grave. Nightmares of her death and ghostly warnings from her dead mentor Cary Mallory prompted Harper to visit her estranged mother in L.A. in search of answers. Going through her father’s possessions, Harper uncovers some uncomfortable truths but nothing specific about who or what she is and worse yet, there is no ghostly trace of her father.
Accepting an interesting intelligence gathering job from Seattle’s head vampire sends Harper to London where she soon discovers the disturbing events taking place in her home city could have connections in England. Harper also must stand up to an even bigger threat, one that has carefully orchestrated her life and has no intention of being thwarted just when she is coming into her strength.
Harper Blaine, the no nonsense heroine of Richardson’s Greywalker series undergoes some serious character development as she comes to terms with old family business while confronting the biggest challenge of her life. Strong characters, Harper’s relationship with the reclusive techno geek Quinton and a solid storyline make this an enjoyable urban fantasy. Those readers familiar with Phaedra Weldon’s Zoë Martinique series will find several similarities with the general premise although Harper comes off as a stronger, less whiny protagonist then Zoe.
