London based exorcist Felix Castor, better known as Fix, uses a tin whistle to send ghosts onward and battle a collection of paranormal creatures in this riveting follow-up to Vicious Circle. During the funeral of friend John Gittings, Fix helps Carla, the widow thwart a lawyer’s court order to cremate the remains although the fancy dressed man vows to have the body exhumed. While Fix works to assist Carla, he takes the job of proving another husband’s innocence.
Janie Hunter doesn’t believe her husband Doug was responsible for a rape and murder that got him arrested. She wants Fix to prove Myriam Kale was to blame despite the fact that Kale died forty years earlier. As Fix digs into what caused Kale’s return he relies on the able assistance of Juliet, a succubus and Nicky, a zombie with paranoia issues, both who help him uncover a darker evil afoot that will challenge them all.
With fast-paced action, a well conceived storyline and further character development, this is everything a paranormal thriller fan could want. Fix comes across as an average Joe trying to do the right thing even if it means getting beaten up or having to face evil with little more then a cheap tin whistle. Strong subplots contribute satisfying depth and a sense of urgency to the mystery while readers familiar with the series will delight in Juliet’s larger role and additional character building. If you haven’t already discovered this fine series, run out; find a copy of The Devil You Know and start in, you won’t be disappointed.
