Jane Yellowrock, a vampire hunter for hire is a part Cherokee skinwalker, sharing her body with the spirit of a mountain lion she refers to as Beast. Her childhood is largely lost, only vague memories that sporadically resurface. Beast and Jane share an uneasy alliance as they periodically struggle for dominance but both are utterly focused on destroying monsters in whatever form they take.
Jane gets the job of hunting a rouge vampire in New Orleans and is disturbed to discover the creature is something different, far more dangerous then a mere vampire. While sorting out vampire politics and trying to maintain workable relationship with the local police department, Jane finds herself drawn to local bad boy, Rick LaFleur who insists he can help with the hunt. By the conclusion of the hunt, Jane will learn about her past and discover the rouge’s true nature, which will put her at odds with one of New Orleans most powerful vampires.
The Beast and Jane share a more personal, antagonistic relationship then seen in most were stories which adds a nice depth to an already strong urban noir. Jane packs enough attitude and weapons to rival the early Anna Blake series while her interactions with the well conceived locals provide satisfying depth. Hunter’s deft use of subplots helps maintain tension without detracting from the main storyline. Patricia Briggs fans will likely enjoy this strong, savvy heroine
