Enge’s dark coming of age fantasy follows Lathmar, the twelve-year-old heir to the Empire of Ontil as he struggles against the machinations of his Protector and uncle, the ambitious Lord Urdhven. Trusting Lord Urdhven with his life and future is not an option for young Lathmar as the man was responsible for murdering his parents and plans to eventually kill the young heir in order to usurp the throne. With the arrival of Ambrosia Viviana and her brother Morlock Ambrosius, Lathmar acquires the aid of two powerful relatives who undertake to raise him as their own. As Lathmar reaches adulthood, poised to take the Empire’s throne, Lord Urdhven modifies his earlier plans to destroy the heir.
This excellently crafted tale tells a familiar story in a world filled with magic and all emotional turmoil of a terrified youngster struggling to gain acceptance. Divided into five main chapters, the world building is topnotch while centering on the four main characters. The emotions have a genuine feel and Lathmar’s angst draws sympathy without being overdone.
