Bumbling “mannies" (humans) looking to gain three wishes continue opening bottles that would be better left sealed. Due in large part to her unusual heritage Magpie Windwitch, a young sprout of a faerie hunts snags, those devils that are released back into the world, with the aid of her trusty crow companions. When Magpie’s hunt takes her to a boat far out to sea she senses nothing but blackness and all consuming hunger. After finding one of the Djinn, a fire elemental extinguished, Magpie realizes something hideous has been set free and the hunt will take Magpie back to her home deep in the forest of Dreamdark.
Hunting snags is dangerous enough, especially one as powerful as “the hungry one” but as Magpie and her companions discover, treachery is everywhere, even in the heart of Dreamdark and enemies abound where you least expect them. Taylor has created a captivating world where size makes no difference to the strength of magic and a warrior’s heart. Fully realized characters coupled with a strong storyline, a brisk pace and an assortment of subplots will hold your interest to the last page. Di Bartolo’s charming illustrations augment Taylor’s imagery and for those looking to read aloud with their kids, really brings the characters to life. This sweet fantasy with ample doses of faerie slang, will appeal to readers of all ages.
