Fans of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series will rejoice at Ward’s latest title which focuses on Rehvenge, owner of the notorious nightspot ZeroSum, local drug czar and a vampire with deep secret. Rehv is a half-breed, both vampire and symphath and as such, must keep his symphath side a closely guarded secret or face banishment. Well versed in playing on peoples weaknesses and double-dealings, Rehv had little problem playing along with a plan to execute Wrath, the vampire King while developing countermeasures.
With so many obligations and the demands of his mixed heritage ravaging his body, Rehv long ago despaired of finding a mate yet there is something about Ehlena, a nurse at the Brotherhood clinic. Ehlena has no personal life beyond taking care of her father, once one of the elite, now penniless and mentally broken by a series of unscrupulous business deals and his wife’s suicide. She is drawn to Rehv, feeling there is much more to the man then he lets on even as she is repulsed by the trappings of his aristocratic life.
Rehv’s story is arguably the best of the series as it effectively deals with complex characters while integrating several equally fascinating subplots. Not the least of these is Wrath’s struggle to fully accept his role as King, a responsibility he never wanted. The lessers have not given up their efforts to destroy the Brotherhood and the vampires they protect and with Lash’s leadership, are a force to be reckoned with. The romance was sweet without overwhelming the story, the engaging dialog between established characters was delightful and the action sufficiently gritty to be convincing. Paranormal romance doesn’t get much better then this.
