Blind from birth, teenaged math whiz Caitlin Decter was thrilled at the offer of a surgical procedure that would implant a Japanese experimental processor allowing her to see. The implant has the unexpected effect of allowing Caitlin to “see” the complex inner structure of cyberspace and discover an emerging life form known as the webmind. This webmind was becoming aware of an existence outside cyberspace at the same time a talented hybrid ape called Hobo began exhibiting painting skills never seen in a primate. Chinese dissidents attempt to circumvent a repressive government through clever use of the internet and in the process become involved with Caitlin and the developing webmind.
A complex story with several subplots woven throughout, this first of three books in the WWW series is thought provoking, yet the numerous loose ends keep it from being a satisfying read. The pacing occasionally feels strained as demonstrated when Caitlin’s mathematic skills inexplicitly develop to such an extent that she is launched onto the world stage. Don’t look for a cliffhanger ending or high tension but for all its drawbacks; this is an interesting concept that will hopefully become more fully realized in future volumes.
