Third in the Kate Daniels series, this imaginative urban fantasy is set in a changed world where unpredictable waves of magic render most technology inoperative and there are plenty of beasties to go bump in the night. Kate Daniels is a mercenary struggling to pay her bills, stay alive and keep her past a deeply buried secret. She is also employed by the Knights of Merciful Aid, a member of the local Mercenaries Guild and more important to her survival, friend to the local Pack. Due to Kate’s tie to the Pack, she found herself having to once again deal with Siaman, a randy shifter with an inordinate interest in jumping her bones.
Siaman introduces Kate to the ubersecretive world of Midnight Games, the ultimate gladiator games where the only way out alive is to win. To save or avenge Derek, a young werewolf Kate befriended, she must face the Reapers with assistance from the Pack. More importantly, Kate needs to discover who is behind the Reapers and only blood can save her and those she cares about in the supreme contest.
Doses of humor serve to lighten the suspense and taut action of this vividly drawn, kick-butt series. Watching Kate attempt to balance the needs of her friends, the demands of her profession and still maintain a sense of right from wrong in a world struggling with massive changes is a treat. The sexual tension between Kate and Curran, the Beast Lord adds to the story without overwhelming the main plot. It will be interesting to learn more of Kate’s mysterious background and see where wild magic drags the world next.
