Bound to the Saghred, an immensely powerful soul-sucking rock, Raine Benares magical abilities were augmented to such an extent that she is feared, reviled and sought after by those who seek to use her or destroy her in order to control the stone. As for Raine, she wants nothing more then to be rid of the evil thing, which is what drove her to the Isle of Mid. Instead of getting free of the cursed stone, Raine becomes magically bound to Tamnais Nathrach, a goblin dark mage with way too many skeletons in the closet and paladin Mychael Eiliesor, commander of the Conclave Guardians. Both men are handsome to a fault but there’s nothing like being caught between representatives of dark and light to make a girl grouchy.
To make matters worse, some damned fool has opened a Hellgate allowing demons to run wild over the island. While entrapping one of the demons, Raine was seen tapping Tam’s abilities through their bond thereby turning herself into Carnades Silvanus’s public enemy number one. Acting as archmagnus of Mid, Carnades saw Raine and the power she commanded as an intolerable threat and would not stop until she was imprisoned or put to death.
Trying to stay out of Carnades clutches while destroying demons, hunting a Hellgate and keeping the Saghred away from the demon queen is no easy task. Good thing Raine’s has some stout, battle ready friends and family watching her back, all she has to do now is keep them alive.
With plenty of demons, politics and a wealth of strong characters, the third installment of the Raine Benares series doesn’t disappoint. The brisk pace and increasingly complex character development propels the story on a rollercoaster ride through demons, goblins, elven and mages while maintaining a satisfying level of romantic attraction. The climax resolves the immediate problems while setting up an entirely different and potentially much larger conflict that will leave readers chomping at the bit for more.
