MacAlister’s popular Dark Ones series revisits Pia Thomason, the plucky heroine from Zen and the Art of Vampires shortly after a European trip that saw her married to the ever distrustful yet incredibly handsome Kristoff. Adjusting to life with a Dark One is never easy and Pia is finding it even more difficult as it appears Kristoff wants no part of her. Heartbroken, Pia tries without much success to resume her quiet workaday life but between being the new Zorya for the Brotherhood of the Blessed Light, the Dark Ones deadly adversaries, and vampires showing up at her door trying to “escort” her to the Moravian Council, life is not going according to plan.
Pia appears before the Council to find Kristoff starved to death and both of them accused murders, kidnappers and worse. To prove their innocence, Pia and Kristoff must undertake a Herculean task while evading the Reapers, those fanatical followers of the Brotherhood who believe the only good vampire is a dead vampire. As they draw closer to their quarry it becomes clear there is a traitor in their midst, someone with a very old ax to grind and Pia may be just what it takes to set matters straight.
Written in the fun, fast paced paranormal romance style fans have come to expect of MacAlister, this delivers plenty of character development and depth even though the real traitor’s identity won’t come as any real surprise. It’s nice to see the return of several established characters, watching them grow and there’s no doubt, Pia’s character will continue to figure prominently as she now holds two seemingly conflicting roles.
