Calliope Reaper-Jones, better known as Callie was just another rat running the corporate maze as a personal assistant with no prospect of advancement until she bit into a bespelled chocolate cupcake. The spell reversed a Forgetting Charm Callie placed on herself three years earlier in an attempt to live a normal life. It allowed her to forget all about the family business Death, Inc. Thanks to someone kidnapping Callie’s father, sister and all the members of the Board plus rumors of a takeover, which would strip the family of their immortality, Jarvis, a faun and Death’s personal assistant, was forced to take drastic measures. Jarvis had to find a way to restore Callie’s memories and bring her back into the family where hopefully she could find out who was responsible. Failure is not an option because, although Callie would be content with a mortal lifespan, the same could not be said for her mother or younger sister.
Taking over the company will not be easy as Callie must prove herself worthy by competing against Daniel, the droolingly delicious Devil’s protégé. First, Callie must accomplish three tasks, one that gains her a hellhound puppy named Runt. With the help of Callie’s younger sister, Clio and the goddess Kali, she will face deadly armies and wage a battle that will determine the family fortunes. That is if she lives long enough!
Actress turned author, Amber Benson has created a brash, sassy heroine oozing attitude as she deals with family, business, an angry goddess, zombie armies and betrayal in this imaginative blend of assorted mythologies. The snappy dialog keeps pace with the quick pace while providing a fun touch of self-depreciating humor. It should be interesting to see where Benson takes Callie next.
