Do you love the sound of a peg leg stomping across a quarterdeck? Or maybe you prefer a parrot on your arm, a strong wind at your back? Adventure, treasure, intrigue, humor, romance, danger - and, yes, plunder! Oh, the Devil does love a pirate - and so do readers everywhere! Swashbuckling from the past into the future and space itself, Fast Ships, Black Sails, edited by Ann and Jeff ...more
Indulge your wild side with this swashbuckling anthology of pirate tales that encompass a broad range times, settings and genres. “Boojum” by Elizabeth Bear and Sarah Monette is one of the more imaginative offerings with it’s telling of a live ship capable of devouring other, lesser ships and crew. A discovery by one of engineering staff leads to an unusual melding along with a chance at freedom and growth in the Big Empty. Carrie Vaughn tells the story of a first mate’s closely guarded secret, that when revealed, may well cost what she holds most dear in “The Nymph’s Child.”
This is an uneven collection as some of the stories are considerably more inventive then others while the language of a few are cumbersome enough to slow the pace. The diverse settings along with the fact that the market isn’t flooded with pirate tales allow this collection to stand out from the crowd despite these minor drawbacks.
