Co-author of the Noble Dead saga Barb Hendee kicks off a new series with her first solo book of The Vampire Memories that focuses on Eleisha Clevon. Nearly two hundred years old, Eleisha appears to be about seventeen, which compliments her gift nicely. As a vampire, Eleisha depends on projecting an aura of helplessness to entice her prey. Turned by Julian to tend his father William who did not make the transition well, Eleisha had little contact with others of her kind. That’s why Edward choosing to walk into the dawn one morning left her so shaken and worse, he planned his death so the police would be involved.
Wade, one of the Portland police that arrived on scene felt Edward’s death as strongly as Eleisha, he felt her presence at the house and wants answers. All his life, Wade has been able to read other peoples thoughts and for the first time, someone was able to respond. For humans to learn of vampires carries a death sentence but Eleisha takes no joy in killing, even when it is necessary. Choosing to flee, Eleisha is stunned when Wade and his partner show up in Seattle and it soon becomes abundantly clear, these men are dangerous. With aid from unexpected sources, Eleisha realizes her kind are under attack and if what she hears is true, vampires are on the brink of extinction.
A satisfying storyline coupled with engaging characters, fast action and a hint of things to come, make this a winner. Fans of Carrie Vaughn, L.A. Banks and Patricia Briggs should check this out.
