Halloween is fast approaching, a fitting time for the release of SanGiovanni’s chiller/thriller sequel to The Hollower that saw the death of an entity from a different dimension. While a tear between dimensions was open, Dave Kohlar saw three figures come through, two picked up their fallen comrade, one stayed behind. Months later people throughout Lakehaven, New Jersey are dying in bizarre ways and that’s not all. Police are finding words or partial words written with the victims’ skin or blood.
With the death of his sister, Dave begins to wonder if that remaining Hollower is a large even as he continues to convince himself that they killed it. Those who assisted Dave are facing their own nightmares and the possibility that another, more deadly Hollower is haunting and hunting them, particularly when it taunts them with the jeering phrase, “Found you.” The Hollower hates humanity, viewing its victims as nothing more then meat to be played with. It intends to make the last days of those connected with the passing of the other pay dearly and knows exactly how to twist secret fears and anger into weapons that strike where they are most vulnerable.
This horror tale grabs your attention with the opening chapter and doesn’t let up. The brisk pace is augmented by strong character development that allows readers to see how the antagonist uses their insecurities against them. The Hollower by its very nature, a faceless creature capable of mimicking the voices of those nearest and dearest, makes a suitably nasty adversary. The satisfying climax reveals unexpected strengths and weaknesses on both sides as Dave struggles to preserve those near and dear to him.
