Book three of the Vampire Babylon series finds Dawn and Kiko of Limpet and Associates recovering from their latest battle with denizens of the L.A. Underground that saw the slaying of Breisi, a fellow hunter. Dawn’s mysterious boss Jonah is in the last stages of preparing to wipe out the infestation of vampires occupying the Underground, a monumental undertaking for anyone.
Dawn is having some major questions about Jonah, the Friends and where her loyalties lie as she faces difficult truths about her family. While tracking down her missing father Frank, Dawn discovered Eva, the mother she thought was long dead was actually a vampire, one of the Elite within the Underground. In a misplaced attempt to rebuild the family, Eva kidnapped Frank. Dawn finds herself drawn to private investigator Matt Lonigan yet he can be as frustratingly unforthcoming as her boss. With the unveiling of unspeakable betrayal, Dawn discovers how brutal the truth can be, especially when she must do something unthinkable to save Jonah. The experience will forever change both their lives and only time will tell if she made the right choices.
The final installment of this trilogy is a kick-butt ride from start to finish with plenty of twists, turns and surprises. Dawn’s inner conflicts are occasionally overdone but overall, she is a strong, capable character while facing some tough decisions and heartbreak. There is a suitable array of vampire masters and minions to provide lots of nonstop action as a series of subplots plays out against the backdrop of L.A. nightlife while hinting at more to come.
