Felix Caster has an unusual job, with the aid of his trusty tin whistle, he performs exorcisms on London area ghosts. It’s a modest living supplemented by the occasional consulting job with the local, pain-in-the-butt police department which is why, when a distraught couple came to him for help in locating their missing daughter Abbie, Felix agreed to look into it.
What should have been a straightforward matter of locating a missing ghost quickly turned ugly when it became clear a powerful force was equally determined Felix not establish contact with Abbie. A satanic cult bent upon bringing the demon Asmodeus into the world have plans for Abbie’s ghost. Felix has had his own history with Asmodeus as it was because of him, Rafi an old acquaintance, resides in a mental hospital. It falls to Felix and his friends including a zombie and a succubus to face off an entire cult, their minions and a host of nasty creatures. Defeating Asmodeus’ plans will cost Felix dearly in flesh and friendships but maybe Abbie’s freedom is worth the price.
Carey has penned a strong follow-up to The Devil You Know with additional character development, a suitably convoluted storyline and plenty of fast-paced action. The church involvement adds interesting depth as well as a great setting for the dark proceedings. Filled with black humor, grisly ghouls and tortured ghosts, Felix is a compelling figure who, with much soul searching and the occasional stumble, makes a grand hero.
