A Hu-Li is an ancient creature known as a werefox, capable of mimicking human form as she struggles to make a living and find enlightenment in a changing world. Plying her wares as a Moscow sex worker allows A Hu-Li to feed off sexual energy by hypnotizing unsuspecting johns with her tail. Its a handy ability that has allowed her kind to coexist with humans, more or less undetected for over 2,000 years despite the occasional lapse.
Shortly after failing to control her temper with a client, A Hu-Li was introduced to Alexander Aery, a high-ranking officer in the FSB with more then a passing interest in the werefox. Legends about the super-werewolf, a creature with unbelievable strength and abilities lead Alexander to suspect he might be the one. He sees A Hu-Li as the key to unlocking the secrets surrounding the myth that will bring him all the power he needs to guide the werewolves and protect Russias interests. Together Alexander and A Hu-Li search for answers but in the end, their interests prove to be quite different as the real super-werewolf is revealed.
Pelevin has used an eclectic mix of Buddhism, werecreatures, satire, erotica and more to create an inventive tale of salvation and enlightenment. Intertwining past and present affairs of the heart with a strong fantasy twist makes this memoir a treat to read and provides a nice introduction to readers unfamiliar with modern Russian authors.
