Renowned podcasting author, Scott Sigler blasts into the hardcover book market with this riveting combination of cutting edge medical sleuthing, covert government agencies and a nasty infectious agent that makes dengue fever look like a walk through the park. It all begins when a few seemingly ordinary people scattered across America suddenly turn into raving, murderous lunatics, killing everyone around them including themselves. Margaret Montoya, an epidemiologist with the CDC recognizes there is a link between these random acts of violence and begins working with the CIA and operative Dew Phillips to track down the contagion. It is an extremely difficult task given that the infected tend to kill themselves by fire and the bodies decompose at an unprecedented rate. When ex-football player Parry Dawsey wakes up one morning with some painful, itchy welts, he thinks maybe they are the result of bug bites. In a matter of days, those welts begin taking on a more sinister aspect and Parry finds himself dealing with personal issues that are nearly as painful as the rash. As one of the newly infected, Parry must wage war on his own body as the parasites begin taking over with sinister purpose. Meanwhile, Margaret and co-researcher Amos Braun race to unlock the mysteries of an entirely new bioengineered parasite while Dew works to keep a lid on the growing epidemic that threatens not only the U.S. but also the world. Lightening fast pace, realistic action and a cracker jack of a storyline make Sigler’s first book a rush and is a terrific introduction to those new to his work.

The first 40% of this novel is outstanding! After that, it is absolutely ridiculous. Even a science fiction novel must have the slim possiblity of actually happening. This one fails miserably in that regard. I would never recommend this one to anyone.
