Book Three of the Goblin Novels chronicles the further adventures of Jig Dragonslayer, a most unlikely hero and high priest of one of the forgotten Gods, Tymalous Shadowstar. It also provides insight on how Shadowstar came to tap a goblin as one of his own and continues a long-standing battle in the realm of the Gods. Jig has plenty of problems when a band of elves and humans attack his mountain home, steal a powerful magical object, the Rod of Creation, take a band of captives and seal the cave entrance. Jig, along with his disciple Relka, trusty fire spider Smudge and Trok, a goblin warrior with delusions of grandeur manage to escape from their captors and seek assistance from Billa the Bloody. Leader of a motley army of trolls, goblins, orcs, kobolds and Oakbottom, a foul tempered ent-like creature, Billa decides to go to war and free the goblins trapped inside the mountain. The battle is more complex then it appears as humans, goblins, elves and Gods converge on the mountainside and nothing will be quite the same again.
Kudos to Hines for another captivating, decidedly unTolkien-like take on a variety of mythical creatures while creating an endearing hero fantasy readers can relate to. The Gods history provides a nice subplot while Jig’s many past deeds come into play in ways he could scarcely have imagine making for a delightful romp.
