As the current heir apparent to the title of Pythia, the world’s chief clairvoyant charged with overseeing the timelines, life has just become considerably more complicated and dangerous for Cassandra Palmer. Most Pythia undergo years of rigorous training to master the enormous power that comes with the title, too bad Cassie had nothing but her raw talent to work when she was “gifted” by her predecessor. Now she finds herself very much the center of attention, all of it unwelcome as every preternatural creature from vampires to war mages seek to kill or control her and the power she wields. Cassie is all too aware that using power always comes with a steep price tag and until she knows the cost, she doesn’t dare use it except as a last resort.
Now the inherent power of Pythia seeks to complete the ritual that would bind itself to Cassie yet thanks to a geis put on her by master vampire Mircea, that is impossible. Cassie finds herself being dragged through a series of time jumps, frequently coming to Mircea’s aid and thus strengthening the power of the geis. The woman who had been groomed for Pythia is determined to alter events to her advantage and barring that, kill Cassie in order to possess the power that comes with the title thus setting the stage for a major league showdown. Cassie may be untrained but she has no intention of being destroyed by the Circle, Fey kings, vampires or anyone else for that matter.
Magic aplenty populates this fast moving, rather dark tale of power, corruption, double-dealings and painful attractions as Cassie comes to grips with her new role in this follow-up to Touch the Dark. It is nice to see a strong, capable heroine taking charge with a kick butt attitude while attempting to balance right and wrong in the face of impossible odds.
