For anyone who’s ever fantasized about becoming an evil ruler comes this collection of fourteen inventive, often humorous tales of world domination. Ester Friesner’s “If Looks Could Kill” sets the tone with a fun tale about a gorgeous elf, his bumbling assistant and a kind hearted dungeon mistress that features a great surprise ending. “Ensuring the Succession” by Jody Lynn Nye explores the lengths a ruler will go to, to groom his son as a successor while Tanya Huff’s, “A Woman’s Work…” takes a very different tack to assure the continued reign of her empire. A few tales like “To Sit in Darkness Here” penned by Steven A. Roman are dark, rather disturbing tales of ruthlessness gone horribly awry. Nina Kiriki Hoffman’s rather poignant “Art Therapy” is an entirely different take on the trials of being an evil overlord.
The atypical premise of this escapist anthology and the fresh perspective of the authors make for an entertaining, sometimes thought provoking read that just begs you to ponder the question, “What would you do if you were an evil overlord?.”
