Return to New York’s dark underbelly introduced in Nightlife as Cal Leandros and his older brother Niko make a living as bodyguards and detectives for an unusual clientele. As half human, half Auphe, Cal considers himself all monster and it is the Auphe heritage that allows him to move more freely among the assorted preternatural creatures that populate the streets than his fully human big brother. When Cal, Niko and their vampire business partner Promise agree to take a simple detective job for the local werewolf Mafia known as the Kin, they assumed it would be an easy job. Just get the goods on a potential Kin boss rival and collect their fee. They could not have been more wrong as the job quickly escalates into something far more sinister and complex. When gifted young George disappears, Cal takes it personally as the team hooks up with Robin Goodfellow, an ancient creature of mythology know as a puck. What they uncover is a frightening set-up orchestrated by the oldest known puck, none other then Goodfellow’s brother. Cal will have to learn how to make use of an Auphe gift if he is to save George, Niko and quite probably himself in this rapid-fire showdown that is sure to leave fans clamoring for more.
A full compliment of bizarre creatures and a desire for power that overrides all else make for an exciting read from start to finish. It is nice to see the continued development of characters introduced in Nightlife although Cal’s sense of alienation gets a bit overdone. One can hardly wait to see what rabbits Thurman pulls out of his hat for the next installment to an action packed series.
