Surviving a vicious attack during which she was raped and left for dead, bounty hunter Anna Strong awakens to discover she has even more to worry about when it is revealed Donaldson her attacker was a rogue vampire who inadvertently turned her. Now Anna must adapt to a new life (or is it death?) with an entirely different set of problems which, due to her blood tie with Donaldson, include tracking down and destroy the rogue vampire before he draws more attention to their secret society. Aided by Avery, the doctor who tended her at the hospital who is an ancient vampire and a “night watcher”, Anna begins learning the ropes while evading vampire hunters, coping with hunger, and sorting out a wayward heart. Her long-term lover Max is a DEA agent working undercover; he’s human and therefore vulnerable, especially when she’s hungry while Avery is a vampire with centuries of charisma and an irresistible appeal.
Shortly after discovering Donaldson torched her home, Anna realizes her partner David has been abducted. Despite some solid leads, frantic searches reveal nothing of David’s whereabouts and time is not on her side. Ignoring Avery’s advice to cut ties with mortals, Anna pursues David with the tenaciousness of a pit bull putting her at loggerheads with some powerful forces. Before long, Anna is forced to make hard choices and form an alliance that will likely have serious repercussions in the future if she lives that long. Still, any risk is worth saving her long time friend and partner.
Smart, savvy and full of kick-butt attitude it is tempting to liken this heroine with Anita Blake of the vampire hunter series yet that would be a mistake as Stein has created a strong, capable character and background that stands nicely own its own merit. This paranormal romance relies more upon a good storyline and strong protagonists then sex making for an entertaining action read. There are some minor holes in the plot but these do not take away from the story that finishes with a solid setup for the next book in this sure-to-be-a-hit series.
