While the storyline and narrative are strong and captive, one gets a sense of arrogance from the author's technique. It is as if Ms. Kostova knows just about everything in Europe and tells you so in a subjective, didactic manner. This wears on the reader's nerves after a while, especially the over-zealous mention of 'tourists' everywhere, as if the narrator owns the entirety of the continent. Overall, 3-4 stars; a little more objectivity in the narration would put it at 5.
