At last, the final volume in the saga of Eragon, bringing the war against Galboratrix to an end. There are plenty of battles and fighting as the alliance nears their prey - what does surprise me is that Galboratrix does fight back as much as he could. There are few surprises as the story nears its climax.
The amount of detail is incredible, you really live through the events and feel your way across the countryside. The climax does have an unexpected twist, and there are more twists to come in its aftermath. Not all are happy endings. The characters of Eragon and Anya continue to develop, with some surprising results. Frustratingly, not all the loose ends are tied - I am still left wondering just who Angela the herbalist really is?
Yet above everything else is a stunning portrayal of the affection between Eragon and his dragon, and his acceptance of his long term fate. A very good book which I thoroughly enjoyed reading - but be warned, at nearly 900 pages it is a doorstop of a book.
