This is the final volume in the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series. Set in a long vanished world after the last Ice Age, but before the advent of farming; Torak is faced with the challenge of leaving the Forest and seeking the lair of Eostra the Eagle Mage within the Mountain of Ghosts.
Can he overcome her in this final battle against the forces of darkness? Accompanied only by his wolf pack brothers and Renn of the Raven tribe; the future is uncertain for everyone. Michelle Paver is brilliant at evoking the atmosphere of this period, building up a wonderful picture of what it must have been like.
It really draws you into the past, feeling sympathy and understanding for the problems and challenges faced by tribe members working closely with animals and their environment. This is not a relaxing read, but a challenging one which demands your concentration throughout.
It appeals to the reader's imagination, making you want to know what happens next and forcing you to turn the next page as you demand answers.
