Siege – Book Review
By Angela Youngman Jun 8, 2010, 17:20 GMT

Set in 1453, this book is a fictional account of the fall of Constantinople and the demise of the Eastern Roman Empire.
It is a fascinating historical adventure story focusing on the activities of three people - a young Turkish Sultan intent on proving his ability to rule, a stubborn Byzantine princess who wants to defend her city by any means possible and a mercenary captain with a score to settle. Who can survive the terrible siege? Intrigue in all camps makes decision making difficult, at times you wonder just who is fighting for who.
It makes fascinating reading. Jack Hight clearly knows his subject and can really bring the past alive. As you read, you feel that you are on those battlements as the Turks attempt to break through. There are interesting insights into the world of the Turks - the intrigues within the harem as favorites struggle for power show how much strength and weakness existed in those royal harems.
Definitely well worth reading, this is a book which grips the imagination so settle down for several hours solid reading!
