Crossing Over – Book Review
By Angela Youngman May 11, 2010, 16:42 GMT

Whether it\'s a curse or a blessing the fact remains: whenever Roger is in enough pain he can cross over to the Land of the Dead and speak to the people there.
An unusual fantasy linking the land of the living with the land of the dead. Roger is keen to keep his secret skill hidden for fear of being burned as a witch. Whenever he is severely injured, Roger crosses over to the land of the dead and can talk to the newly dead.
Escaping from his uncle's fairground act; Roger seeks refuge working as a laundress in the Royal Court. But it is a royal court under siege - two queens both in conflict for power and Roger inevitably gets drawn in. Who will win the deadly contest? When Queen Caroline of the Greens brings in barbarian tribesmen to fight for her, the stakes only get worse.
Then there is the mystery of Soulvine Moor - why will no talk of it? What is a hisaf? What happened to Roger's mother on the moor? At times this is quite a frightening story with an unusual system of magic. Roger is a character with whom you cannot help but empathize - he is torn between his own desires and needs, and those of the people who are seeking to manipulate him.
Can he survive? You are never quite certain. Definitely worth reading, it is an irresistible page turner, once started you just have to find out what happens next.
